VIRA Island Race Series Port Alberni Paper Chase 15k Virtual Challenge 2021

There are still a few days left for us to complete the VIRA Island Race Series Port Alberni Paper Chase 15k Virtual Challenge.

Therefore, if you haven’t already done so, you should definitely do it as soon as possible because you only have until March 10th to upload your submission.

The challenge is as follows:

A. Run challenge: Run 15K on one day or over two/ three days

B. Photo challenge: Take a selfie with a street, building, sign or object that is related to paper.

I think it’s great that we are given some flexibility to complete the running challenge over one, two or three days. This gives runners of all levels an opportunity to participate in this awesome event.

As for the photo challenge, I’m loving all the photos that are currently posted on the VIRA-Island Race Series Facebook page. You don’t have to complete your photo and your run challenge on the same day.

Here’s how mine went down:

Run Challenge Overview

For my run challenge, once again, I did not wander too far away from my house. I decided to do a nice out and back totaling 15k. I headed out towards Langford/View Royal on the Galloping Goose trails for 7.5k and then made my way back home.

I was pleasantly surprised by how good the run felt. I was running  every km under 5 minutes, which I’m always happy with whenever I do that during a virtual race. I always take it easier during virtual races compared to “in person” events. This run was very enjoyable and the weather was perfect for it!

Photo Challenge Overview

For my photo challenge, I found the Saanich Newspaper from 2013 where I made the front page for running from Port Hardy to Victoria for charity. I felt that it was appropriate for me to take my post-run selfie with the newpaper because it reminded me of the joy that the long run brought me.

In 2013, that was the wildest thing I’ve ever done (before going skydiving, then all the 24-hour runs, the 6-day run, the 12 marathons in 12 days, etc). It was a celebration of my return to running after being injured for a while and it made me believe that anything is possible. I had no idea that nearly a decade later, I’d still be at it, now more than ever.
